Raul Valle Fight Video and the Trial of Raul Valle
The community of Shelton, Connecticut continues to grieve the death of James “Jimmy” McGrath, a 17-year-old Fairfield Prep student whose life was cut short during a violent altercation at a house party in 2022. A rising student-athlete who played both football and lacrosse, McGrath’s tragic end has become the center of a high-profile murder trial. The accused, Raul “Lito” Valle, now 20, faces charges of murder and assault stemming from a deadly series of events that began with a teenage disagreement over beer.

The Initial Conflict and Video
On the evening of May 14, 2022, what started as a typical teenage gathering spiraled into a fatal confrontation. Griffin Marcinczyk, a friend of McGrath’s, testified in court that the chaos began at a small party on Lazy Brook Road in Shelton. There, Marcinczyk and a friend were confronted by Valle and two other students from St. Joseph High School in Trumbull.
The tension erupted when one of Valle’s friends allegedly took a 12-pack of Bud Light from Marcinczyk’s companion. Rather than walking away, the group decided to settle the issue with fists. According to Marcinczyk, Valle threw the first punch and even struck his friend with a motorcycle helmet during the brief scuffle. The fight, which lasted less than a minute, ended when a parent came outside, yelling at the teens to stop.
The incident was partially recorded by party attendee Isabella Molnar, while another attendee, Emily Robinson, tried to break it up. Both testified that the gathering was initially small but grew in size, with alcohol being consumed by minors. The atmosphere of teen revelry soon turned to conflict.
Escalation via Group Chat
Although the physical fight ended quickly, the emotional fallout did not. Marcinczyk testified that shortly after the party dispersed, heated arguments reignited in a group chat. Fueled by frustration, the teens arranged a second confrontation. Marcinczyk, then a 16-year-old Shelton High School student, invited Valle’s group to a different party taking place on Laurel Glen Drive that night.
According to court testimony, this invitation may have served as a setup. Defense attorney Kevin Smith later questioned whether this second meeting was an attempt to get “payback” for the earlier altercation. Marcinczyk admitted the thought crossed their minds but denied any plan for serious violence.
Second Party Turns Deadly
As the party on Laurel Glen Drive gained momentum, Valle and his companions arrived in a Honda Pilot. Witnesses said the car was quickly surrounded by at least 20 people who began rocking the vehicle. The car pulled away, but shortly after, it returned and drove up and down the road, while people inside allegedly threw objects at the house items including a can of WD-40 and a jug of water. Partygoers returned the gesture, launching the objects back at the car.
Soon after, Valle and another individual stepped out of the vehicle, and a verbal argument began on the front lawn. Tensions boiled over once again, and two separate fights broke out: one involving Valle and another involving his friend. Marcinczyk testified that most people were focused on the fight involving Valle’s companion, but the situation quickly took a dark turn.
Marcinczyk described seeing Valle run to the Honda Pilot, open the door, and then rush back toward the crowd. “My buddy Charlie starts yelling that he has a knife,” he told the court. Witnesses said that panic broke out as the realization spread that someone was armed.
Tanner Chernowsky, another friend of McGrath, had been filming the fight until he heard the warning. “He has a knife,” someone shouted. At that point, he stopped recording. Moments later, McGrath was seen lying on the ground in his white shorts, stained completely red with blood.
The Tragic Death of James McGrath
McGrath had been stabbed in the chest. According to the testimony of Dr. James Gill, Connecticut’s chief medical examiner, McGrath died from a single stab wound that pierced his heart. Efforts to revive him were immediate. Two medics described applying a chest seal, performing CPR, and transporting him by ambulance to Bridgeport Hospital. Despite these efforts, McGrath was pronounced dead.
The scene was chaotic, with young people crying, yelling, and trying to help the injured. Chernowsky and Marcinczyk said they did what they could for the other stabbing victims as well.
During Marcinczyk’s emotional testimony, Valle was seen crying in the courtroom, at one point grabbing a tissue while hearing the details of that night unfold.
Defense Strategy and Cross-Examination
Raul Valle’s defense attorney, Kevin Smith, presented a different perspective. He argued that Valle had been ambushed by McGrath’s friends. During cross-examination, Smith pressed both Marcinczyk and Chernowsky on whether the intention behind inviting Valle to the second party was to retaliate. He suggested that the act of surrounding and rocking the Honda Pilot, throwing objects, and shouting threats indicated a hostile setup.
“You didn’t want to get payback for the Lazy Brook Road?” Smith asked. “Sure, it was in thoughts,” Marcinczyk admitted, “but at that point in time, they’re all sitting in the car. You can’t do anything, so…”
Smith challenged Chernowsky’s decision to film the altercation, accusing him of treating the fight as entertainment. “You were cheering it on until people got hurt,” he said. Chernowsky denied this, claiming he filmed impulsively and deleted the video as soon as he learned about the stabbing.
Smith also questioned how many people were actually fighting versus watching. Both witnesses estimated that most attendees were spectators, not participants, creating a tense and crowded environment around the fights.
Finally, Smith suggested that Valle may have felt trapped and acted out of fear when he retrieved the knife.
The Character of the Victim
During the trial, the court also heard from McGrath’s father, Kevin McGrath, who spoke with reporters. He described his son as “a welcoming person” who “had a good heart” and was always looking to help others.
Witnesses echoed this description in court. Marcinczyk said that Jimmy wasn’t violent by nature and wouldn’t have fought unless it was to protect a friend. A female witness also testified that McGrath did not initiate any physical aggression that night.
James McGrath was a standout student and athlete, participating in both football and lacrosse at Fairfield Prep. He was scheduled to graduate in the spring of 2023. His death has left a permanent scar on his school community and beyond.
Legal Status and Outlook
Raul Valle, who was 16 at the time of the stabbing, is being tried as an adult. The case was transferred to adult court shortly after his arrest in 2022. Valle has pleaded not guilty to all charges, which include one count of murder and three counts of assault for injuring others during the fight.
The defense has not yet indicated whether Valle will testify in his own defense. Earlier, Valle rejected a plea deal that would have resulted in a 40-year prison sentence, opting instead for a full trial.
Judge Shari Murphy is presiding over the case in Milford’s state Superior Court. The trial is expected to continue in the coming weeks, with additional witnesses and possibly expert testimony.
A Tragic Reminder
The death of James McGrath is more than a criminal case fit’s a stark reminder of the dangers of teenage conflict, underage drinking, and impulsive violence. What began as a petty disagreement over alcohol quickly escalated into a deadly altercation that claimed a young life with a promising future.
The trial of Raul Valle will determine legal accountability, but for McGrath’s family and community, no verdict will undo the pain of that night. As the courtroom proceedings unfold, they remain focused on honoring Jimmy’s memory and seeking justice for the boy who never came home from a party.
